How to open up the Power Supply

by BTH
(New Jersey (USA))

My power supply is dead and in my research I see that a lot of times the bridge rectifier has gone bad. What I cannot find is how do you take apart the power supply to access the board to test the components? Unit is out of warranty and I'd hate to bring it someplace and pay $200.00 for service when I can pick up the part for $12.00 and repair it myself. The only logical way I see is to somehow remove the caulking around the back of the unit that will hopefully lead to screws to remove the back. Am I on the right track?

Water inside power supply box
by: Denny Pry

Took me almost all day but with lacquer thinner and a screwdriver pealing the epoxy off in the back. I finally was able to get to the screws and opened it up to sit in the sun to dry and it now is working fine. I thought the thing was done but was able to save it at least for a little bit I’m going to watch for a day running then if still fine I will use some all weather clear caulk in place of the epoxy. Thanks for the suggestions on this site.

Use a utility knife to gently peel off the bottom of the switch protection plastic. Put a touch of contact cleaner. Everything works perfectly. 120€ saved.
Utiliser un cutter pour décoller délicatement le bas du plastique de rotection de l'interrupteur. Mis un coup de néttoyant pour contacts. Touty fonctionne nickel. 120€ d'économisés.

Power Switch not working or no power
by: Jay R

Confirming that the simple removal of the plastic to expose the metal clicker" that makes contact across the circuit board was the fix for my issue. After cleaning the contacts. I used four small strips of 3m very thin double stick foam tape to hold the metal in place. Then replaced the plastic cover with the printed on off button. Last, I placed a small 3"by 3" clear plastic shipping tape over the surface extending to the plastic frame to waterproof the repair. All works perfectly. Total time, 15 minutes.

Dolphin power supply.
by: Anonymous

Used a hair dryer on the on/ off switch. Peeled off plastics exposing metal button and four areas where blue lights display. Cleaned it, put plastic back with small strips of duck tape around all four edges. I works again! Keep away from moisture. The plastic on button was splitting from the sun and let moisture in. Don’t know how long it will last, but it works great now!

Repair OK !
by: Manu

Thanks Raoul, you saved my day !
You were right, on my 9995671, it was only an issue with the power switch (no led at all). After removing the switch cap, it does not seam oxidized, but after cleaning it and soldering it a little better, the blue lights goes on ! No need to open it completly. Thanks again !

Is the power switch the one with the circlew and line, or the one where you select the time sequence.
Thanks for your guidance.

How to repair an 9995670 Power Supply
by: Raoul

Hi All,
if you own a 9995670 Power Supply and it is not working any more , in many cases the reason is the power switch. It will be oxidized by moisture.
So you have to open it. It is not necessary to open the whole case, only the power switch.
You have to heat up the plastic part of the switch with a hairdryer, so you can fold up the thick foil witch the blade of a carpet knife.
If you loosen the foil you can see the upper Part of the switch, it's only fixed with a small duct tape. Remove the upper part and clean the oxidized parts of the switch, with fiberglass pen and contact cleaner. Put everything back together.
I fixed the plastic foil with double sided duct tape, but pay attention to leave the middle out of glue to let the switch work.
I made some pictures, but do not know howto load it up here.
Best wishes
Raoul

Use paint thinner. Soak a paper towel with paint thinner and moisten the epoxy. Wait about 10 mins or so and take a wedge or screw driver and with a soft blow hammer pop the epoxy loose from the plastic. Soon enough will be lose where you can peel out the epoxy and expose the screwws. If no paint thinner a heat gun can work also. Heat up a section at a time and work it slowly around. Good luck.

Don't even try - just go buy a new one
by: Anonymous

My pool robot got submerged when our house was flooded. When I powered it up it tripped the supply. I figured that the robot would be OK as it spends a lot of time underwater anyway. Being a "fix-it" type I tried to open (hopefully to dry out) the power supply which although "splash-proof" is clearly not designed to be submerged.

Opening the case took ages - there are 4 screws but the whole thing is "sealed" with some type of hard sealer which nothing would shift except just digging it away. Persisting until I got it open I saw it was wet so I wiped out the mud and dried it being careful with the electronics. I powered it up, didn't trip, LED's flashing but wouldn't control the robot. Bought a new one - works fine.

Dolphin Premier - Failed Power Supply
by: rick

my Dolphin PS is part 9995678. as someone already posted, the circuitry in this unit is manufactured by HGPower. i'm including pics for locations of screws, and manufacture's info. i'm going to seek replacement part - rather than spend $200 for entire PS. i may find the cost of replacing the circuitry is more than the entire PS.. but at least i know what to look for. if anyone has been able to purchase this for a reasonable cost.. please post where you got one. thanks.

fyi - i used a 1/4" wood working tool - that has a sharp flat edge - to get under the hard plastic caulk. work slow and carefully.

Got mine open
by: Anonymous

My power supply also failed, so I decided to open the case up. There are four screws on the back under the bead of caulk. They are located next to small gaps in the plastic body; you can use a utility knife to cut away just enough to get the four screws out.
Once the screws are out, the back plate can be pried out and you can access the power supply inside of the case. It's an hgp-d180a which is made by HGPower (hgpower.com). While I have yet to find any useful information about how to diagnose or service this part (not an electronics expert, but I can solder), there are places that state they can repair. I found https://www.iernc.com/ and they quoted between $175 and $250 to have it repaired (board only, not entire unit). My concern would be if the small board that contains the power switch and timer functions is causing the issue, then the money spent would have been wasted. I might just buy a replacement from Amazon as the (variable) cost of repair could exceed the price of a new unit.
If my pool weren't turning into a toad pond, I might spend more time tinkering with the thing, but it's getting kinda gross in there.

Working Again
by: BTH

Not sure what the problem was, but after a thorough cleaning with a product called Contact Renew + Lube the power supply worked fine after reassembly. Although there was nothing visible I would guess possible corrosion build up on the contacts someplace?

Well I finally got it open. Had to cut through all the caulk with a Dremel which did expose 4 screws. Now that I'm inside there is more in there than I expected. Is there a schematic available anywhere?

Open Case
by: ADMIN

I have not opened this model case however, other Dolphin power supplies open from the bottom. You may be correct about the caulk but check the bottom. There may be a plastic cover over the screws.
Sorry I can't help any more than that.
